Microneedling + PRP: A Natural Strategy Against Hormonal & Age-Related Skin Changes

The skin is your body’s largest organ, working constantly to protect you from environmental stress, pathogens, and dehydration. Because it’s exposed daily, it often shows the earliest signs of hormonal shifts and aging. Changes like dryness, thinning, uneven tone, or loss of elasticity can reflect what is happening inside the body.

We can support the skin’s resilience with treatments that stimulate its natural repair process. Microneedling with PRP uses collagen induction and the healing properties of growth factors to renew the skin. At RejuvaCare Aesthetics and Wellness, we offer this treatment along with many others to our patients in Golden, CO, and the surrounding areas.

How Hormones and Age Impact the Skin

Hormones influence nearly every layer of the skin, from oil production to collagen structure. For example, estrogen helps maintain skin thickness, hydration, and elasticity by supporting collagen synthesis and increasing hyaluronic acid levels. When estrogen declines during menopause, skin can become thinner, drier, and more prone to fine lines. Testosterone and cortisol shifts also affect the skin, sometimes causing acne, inflammation, or slower wound healing.

Aging adds another layer of complexity. Fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin, become less active as you age. Blood flow to the skin slows, which reduces oxygen and nutrient delivery, and the outer barrier becomes less effective, leading to dryness and increased sensitivity. When you combine hormonal changes with age-related slowdown, the skin loses its ability to recover and regenerate the way it once did.

What Microneedling Does for Aging and Hormonal Skin

Microneedling can stimulate your skin and wake up its repair systems. These devices create microchannels in the skin, which prompt your skin to start rebuilding itself with fresh collagen and elastin. Fibroblasts become more active, which helps restore the structure and firmness that often decline with age or hormonal shifts. Circulation also improves in the treated areas, allowing more oxygen and nutrients to reach the skin to support healing.

The treatment tightens the skin through the production of collagen and elastin, and it also helps regulate uneven pigment by encouraging turnover in the deeper layers where discoloration often starts. You may also notice improvements in texture, because microneedling supports the skin’s cellular turnover. After a series of microneedling treatments, you may have smaller visible pores, reduced sun damage, and a decrease in fine lines and wrinkles.

What PRP Does for Aging and Hormonal Skin

PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, comes from a small sample of your blood that we refine to isolate the most concentrated platelets and growth factors. These components are part of your body’s natural repair system and help trigger regeneration in tissues that need support. When applied to the skin after microneedling, PRP tells your cells to rebuild, strengthen, and renew. In skin affected by aging or hormone shifts, that signal can reactivate repair functions that have become slower or less efficient.

Growth factors in PRP support collagen remodeling, help thicken thinning skin, and improve moisture retention by encouraging the production of hyaluronic acid. PRP can also reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, both of which tend to increase with hormonal fluctuations. PRP may help regulate pigment by influencing how melanocytes behave within the dermis. Combined with microneedling, it creates a healing response that addresses changes happening below the surface.

Why Combine Microneedling and PRP?

When we combine microneedling and PRP, we create a stronger signal for your skin to repair itself. Microneedling opens precise channels that allow the PRP to reach deeper layers where it can work more effectively. Instead of sitting on the surface, those growth factors move into the areas that need repair and help your skin rebuild with better structure and function.

This combination works especially well for skin affected by aging or hormonal changes. PRP encourages lipid production and supports the cells that maintain your outer barrier. Microneedling improves absorption and helps carry those signals deeper, where they can activate repair in areas that have slowed down. Together, they help restore a more stable, responsive foundation for healthier skin.

What to Expect From Your Treatment

We start by cleansing your skin and applying a topical anesthetic blend that includes benzocaine, lidocaine, and tetracaine. You will rest with the numbing cream for about 30 minutes to allow it time to work. While you wait, we draw about 30 cc of blood and prepare the PRP by spinning it in a centrifuge to separate out the red blood cells.

Once your skin is numb, we remove the anesthetic, cleanse your skin again, and apply alcohol to prep the surface. Then we begin microneedling in sections, usually starting with the forehead and moving across the face at carefully adjusted depths between 0.25 mm and 1.75 mm. We apply the PRP topically and allow it to penetrate deep into the microchannels we have just created with the SkinPen® device. The process typically takes 30 to 45 minutes, depending on whether we treat the neck as well. You may benefit from a series of three to six treatments to gradually build your results.
